Calangute to get STP by March 2015

Will Produce Clean Water From Sewerage As By-Product
Calangute to get STP by March 2015
CALANGUTE:Work on the sewerage treatment plant (STP) at Baga is progressing at a brisk pace and the STP is expected to be ready by March-end 2015. The foundation stone had been laid by former chief minister Manohar Parrikar in March 2013. The STP will have a capacity to treat 5.6 MLD of sewerage per day.
The STP was one of the election promises of the BJP during the last assembly elections and work on the STP had started within one year of the BJP coming to power.
The STP had been proposed as the ground water table in Calangute had been contaminated due to sewerage discharged by the hundreds of hotels, guest-houses, restaurants and households in the tourism-dominated village.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said the STP, being built with the latest technology, would produce clean water from the sewerage and that the water could be used for gardening and other purposes. The STP is being built by SMC Enviro JV, a Mumbai-based company at the cost of around Rs 50 crore.
Once ready, the STP will be linked with the sewerage pipeline network which is also fast nearing completion, after which the process to connect households and business establishments to the sewerage network will commence.
