KHARAGPUR: IIT-Kharagpur was under siege by a disgruntled labour union affiliated to BJP over alleged bias since Tuesday morning. The deadlock broke 13 hours later at 9.30pm.
The contractors for buildings meant to accommodate students and provide them with meals employ labourers. BJP supporters are allegedly denied the opportunity. Bharatiya Mazdur Morcha had on November 19 demonstrated against this alleged discrimination.
On Tuesday at 8am, 400-odd demonstrators led by union head Rina Singh lay siege to the IIT main gate. “Even if our supporters find work other party members force them out,” said Singh.
At noon, police from Hijli outpost tried to intervene. When they failed, the cops barricaded the area. At 9pm, SDO Sanjaya Bhattacharya sent a deputy magistrate who assured them that a meeting will be held on Wednesday noon. After this the demonstrators dispersed at 9.30pm.
