A 42-year-old man, working at a building demolition site, died after a wall collapsed on him on Sunday night.

The police said the victim, Murugan, was working as a cleaner.

On Sunday, around 11.30 p.m., he was standing near the wall of an old building on Muthu Street, which was being demolished by an excavator, when a portion of the wall fell on him.

He was lying, gasping for breath, underneath the debris.

“We were patrolling the locality and on seeing the accident, called 108,” said a police patrol officer.

Murugan was taken to Government Royapettah Hospital, where he died a while later.

The Mylapore police have registered a case and arrested five persons, including the driver of the excavator.
