As the second phase of elections in Jharkhand takes place today, Deepu Sebastian Edmond speaks to Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and former chief minister Arjun Munda over the prospects of him becoming the Chief Minister
The rumour is that if the BJP ends up with a majority of its own, it will replace you with a non-adivasi Chief Minister. Is there any truth in that?
The issue this election is not whether there will be a tribal or non-tribal CM at the end of polls. The issue is of stability and the party is currently concentrating only on that.
Does it really matter who will be the CM? Because it looks like Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take a call on all major decisions concerning the state.
If a state government gets formed on the PM’s commitment, isn’t it much better? There are things that only the Centre can do for the states, such as forest clearances, and the support that the PM will mean all our projects will be fast-tracked.
Is it true that Modi does not favour you personally? Does it worry you that your lack of an RSS upbringing could be a disadvantage?
This rumour about Modiji not supporting me is completely untrue. It has been spread by my opponents. Sab theek hai. As for the RSS, if you know anything about it, you would also know that there is no deadline for joining it. We can join the RSS anytime.
Does the fact that there are multiple claimants to the CM’s position hamper the BJP in any way?
Is anything wrong with ambition? It is a good thing that we have multiple leaders eligible to become CM. At the end of the day, we all will obey the party’s decision.
Your party says you could not govern effectively because of instability. Still, looking back, what were your major achievements as chief minister?
There are so many, you will have to write pages about it.
….But the JMM claims the Hemant Soren government was the best the state ever had and that it did a lot to empower women.
We started the empowerment of women. Self-help groups were started by my government. I came up with the infrastructure to host the (2011) National Games.
