The sensational heist at Kamala Nagar on Saturday that cost a guard’s life and Rs 1.5 crore may be the work of the same duo who had attempted to rob an ATM kiosk in Gurgaon on Wednesday, police said.

They said there were 10 teams, besides the Crime Branch and the Special Cell, investigating the daylight robbery at a Citibank ATM on Bungalow Road. Of these, a team each had been sent to Aligarh, Noida and Gurgaon. The team from Gurgaon brought in leads about the similar robbery on Wednesday.

A senior police officer said, “The modus operandi in both crimes is similar. Two persons riding a black Pulsar bike are spotted in the CCTV footage in Gurgaon’s Palam area. They fired three shots at the guard, snatched the bag with Rs 10 lakh from the loaders and rode off.”

He said unlike in Saturday’s attack, the two persons were not wearing helmets and police got a sketch made of the two. The guard is alive, though still in hospital.

Police said the two Palam robbers dropped the box a couple of hours later because they could not open it and feared it might be tracked as it had a GPRS device. On Sunday, however, police got a call at around 1.15 am from a policeman saying the grey box emptied of Rs 1.5 crore was found in Mukimpur in Sabzi Mandi area, 2.5 km from the crime scene.

Police also said when the cash van left its Mansarovar Garden office to cover 10 ATMs on its route, it diverted — a routine. The two robbers trailing the van had planned to snatch the money at a different ATM but when the van stopped on Bungalow Road, they decided to strike.

Police have questioned around  100 persons since Saturday, including guards recently laid off by the cash agency Scientific Security Management System (SSMS), the driver and the two loaders.

Police also questioned the two customers present in the kiosk at the time of the heist. Deepak and his help have since been cleared.

Footage from more than 62 cameras at the scene and along the route taken by the bikers are being studied.
