NPS Int’l School opens satra after renovation
Guwahati: NPS International School, Guwahati, has reopened the historic Shri Shri Damodar Dev Satra at Patbaushi in Barpeta district after renovating it.
Originally constructed by Ahom king Swargadeo Pramatta Singha (1744-1751 CE), it was in a dilapidated condition since ages. Its renovation was undertaken by the management, teachers and students of NPS International School in June this year as a part of the school’s social responsibility activities.
Stressing on preservation of architecture, Jitendra Nath Das, director of the school, said, “To keep our proud tradition alive for the new generation, the duty of safeguarding these invaluable cultural symbols is of both the government and society. Therefore, the NPS family has come forward to initiate necessary steps towards this noble deed which has played a key role in cultivating the spiritual growth of our students.”
About 32 students and four teachers were involved in renovating and painting the satra. “It was wonderful to witness the incredible zeal of our students and teachers in making this event a success. We feel blessed to be a part of this propitious event and hope that the Almighty will bless all of us,” he added.
Barpeta, which is known as the ‘land of satras’, has numerous historic satras that represent the richness of Assamese culture and tradition. Age old satras built in Assam, especially in Barpeta and Majuli, are of immense historic and artistic value. But many of them are in a dilapidated state now.
The satra reopening ceremony was organized in a grand manner.
