Murder of merit

Letter November 29, 2014
Unfortunately, this is the sorry state of affairs in some of our best-known universities

QAMBAR SHAHDADKOT: This is with reference to reports of tests being conducted by the Sindh University (SU) and the Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) for lecturers in grades 18 for two days in October. The SMIU did this through the National Testing Service while the SU did it through its own testing centre. The result was that the SMIU test was more broad based and contained mostly technical questions. The SU test contained questions that were quite frankly puzzling, and were not evenly spread out over the various subjects. However, when the results were to come in, the National Testing Service did not post them on its website. Instead, the SMIU displayed the candidate shortlist on its own notice board but did not inform candidates of this.

Nevertheless, I managed to qualify for the interview and was at number five on the list according to the marks achieved in the written test. However, the very next day, I read in the newspaper that the three slots were filled and that all of them went to favourites. Unfortunately, this is the sorry state of affairs in some of our best-known universities.
