Nobel laureate says there are 1 billion solutions to India’s problems
MUMBAI: Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Satyarthi on Friday shared the prestigious prize with all Indians who nurture moral values and work for human development. Addressing a function in Mumbai Friday evening, he described India as “a land with hundred problems but one billion solutions (in its population)”.
Satyarthi was guest of honour at the 37th Jamnalal Bajaj awards ceremony held in South Mumbai.
This year’s awardees are Surendra Koulagi of the Janapada Seva Trust, Karnataka, Ram Kumar Singh of Suruchi Shikshan Vasahat Trust, Bardoli, Gujarat, Chennupati Vidya who runs the Vasaviya Mahila Mandali in Andhra Pradesh and Sulak Sivaraksa of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists, Thailand.
Satyarthi said, “There is so much to learn from these stalwarts whose career in social work likely began even before I was born. If I sat at their feet, it would take 10-20 years for me to imbibe their qualities.” The child rights activist who runs the Bachpan Bachao Andolan had brought a few score schoolchildren to attend the function and often addressed them during his speech.
The organisers commemorated the 125th birth anniversary of Jamnalal Bajaj. Each winner was given a citation and a reward of Rs 10 lakh.
