A special sitting of the State Cabinet at Kalburgi (formerly Gulbarga) has decided to submit a proposal to the Supreme Court through the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) for permission to auction 15 ‘C’ category mines in Ballari, Chitradurga and Tumkuru districts.

The CEC in its report to the Supreme Court had identified 51 mines with maximum illegalities in the three districts, where illegal mining by way of mining pits outside the sanctioned lease areas were to the extent of 10 to 15 per cent of the lease area and were classified as category C mines.

Timeframe With the apex court’s approval, the State government plans auction six mines during December and January and the remaining ones in April-May next.

The Cabinet has also decided take up restoration of ecology/environment in the three districts, which have been affected due to rampant illegal mining.

The plan, which is to be submitted to the Supreme Court’s clearance, is to strengthen infrastructure such as transport, communication, environment and forests, drinking water, education, skill training and agriculture related programmes.

₹2,000-cr proposal The proposal to the tune of ₹2,000 crore will be implemented through Mining Restoration Corporation. Priority will be given to SC/ST communities in this programme.

The Cabinet has approved granting mining lease of 6.38 hectares (15.31 acres) land to Hutti Gold Mines Company in Raichur district.

Other proposals The Cabinet also approved providing state government’s guarantee to Karnataka State Industrial Development Corporation to raise ₹27 crore for its working capital.

The State government has decided to request the Union Human Resources Development Ministry, which is planning to set up Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Dharwad in PPP mode, to pay 50 per cent of guidance value to acquire 61.06 acres of land.

The Cabinet also approved Karnataka State Warehousing Corporation proposal to seek loan assistance from Nabard under Warehousing Infrastructure Fund 2013-14. The Cabinet approved the corporation’s proposal for an unconditional guarantee for ₹93.57 crore.
