Upping the ante against the ruling party, senior estranged Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP P. Kannan declared that he and his supporters “would not rest” until the Chief Minister N. Rangasamy-led Government was unseated.

Describing the governance in the Union Territory as ‘jungle raj’, Mr. Kannan called upon a large gathering of his supporters to take a pledge to oust the “increasingly unpopular” All India NR Congress government.

Breaking out of an extended recluse, Mr. Kannan planned the protest to come back into political limelight as well as to use it as a show of strength of his support base.

“This is the beginning of our fight to oust the government. The Rangasamy government committed several misdeeds and law and order has broken down. People are frustrated over the functioning of government. We will not rest until it is sent home. Then we will enter into the Assembly,” Mr. Kannan said.

Assailing the Chief Minister Mr. Rangasamy for various omissions and commissions, Mr. Kannan said Mr. Rangasamy came to power after tendering several promises to the voters. Even though his tenure completed four years, he is yet to fulfil those promises.

Listing out the murders that had occurred near the residence of Chief Minister in Thattanchavadi, Mr.Kannan demanded that Mr. Rangasamy step down after owning responsibility and face an inquiry headed by either a retired Judge of the Supreme Court or High Court.

Apart from the alleged scam in distribution of free rice to cardholders and irregularities in Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) admissions, he also pointed to non-payment of salaries to Government employees and worker of mills and hike in prices of milk and other essential commodities.

Seven superintendents of police and large number of police personnel were deployed to provide security at the protest venue.
