The Desmond Carrick studio sale will be held at Whyte's Galleries, Freemasons Hall, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2, on Saturday, December 6, at 12.0. This will be followed by the Christmas art and collectables sale at 3.0.

Desmond Carrick (1929-2012) was elected a member of the RHAA in 1968. For 44 years his paintings were a familiar sight on the academy walls, particularly during the annual exhibitions. His role as Secretary for the Academy in the late 1970s saw his skills as an administrator come to the fore and he played a crucial role in transforming the old academy site into the modern space it is today.

The 179 Desmond Carrick paintings at Whyte's sale include Prevailing westerly winds at Ballyconneely, 24x32in, estimate €1,500-€2,000; Saving hay at Carraroe, 18x24in, €1,200-€1,500; River Boats, Grand Canal, 20x30in, €1,500-€2,000; On the beach, Nerja, Malaga, 18x24in, €1,200-€1,500; Freigneux, Oise, France, 24x32in, €1,500-€2,000; Spanish interior with nude, 30x40, €1,800-€2,200; and Landscape with bulls, 14x32in, €1,500-€2,000. These are the more important works, but most of the others are catalogued with much lesser prices.

The top selling items at the sale held by RJ Keighery, Waterford, included €3,500 for a diamond and sapphire crescent brooch set in 18ct gold; 15ct French love bracelet, €1,300; Christian Dior black astrakhan and mink jacket, €2,000; Victorian mahogany secretaire bookcase, €800; Victorian rosewood foldover card table on platform base, €720; Persian rug with red and blue ground, 13x10in, €700; pair Waterford crystal A6 Avoca chandeliers, €3,000; Waterford chandelier, €1,400; and an 18ct gold gents pocket watch, €700.

OLIVER USHER

An auction of circa 600 lots of fine art and antiques will be held by Oliver Usher, John Street, Kells, Co Meath, on Tuesday next, December 2.

Items include a William IV D-end extending mahogany dining table with seven leaves, 17ft fully extended, estimate €3,000-€5,000; Irish Regency carved mahogany double ended sofa, €1,300-€1,500; Victorian oak breakfront 5-door bookcase, 10ft high x 9ft wide, €2,500-€3,500; Victorian leather top mahogany Dickens desk, €600-€800; set Victorian rosewood dining chairs, €500-€800; Victorian 2-door mahogany bookcase, €800-€1,000; and a Georgian mahogany bureau bookcase, €600-€800.

Also included is a Victorian mahogany 4-door sideboard, Victorian mahogany dumb waiter, Victorian gilt over mantel, fully fitted period dolls house, art deco wardrobe and matching bed, oriental carpet squares and runners, Georgian mahogany 8ft serving table, leaded-glass hall lantern, jewellery, china, Waterford glass, paintings and prints, and a set of 4 Victorian plated meat covers.

MATTHEWS

A good antique and interiors auction with over 600 lots will be held by Matthews Auctioneers, Oldcastle, Co Meath, next Tuesday, December 2, at 6.30pm. Included in this sale are 17 cases of realistically priced vintage Bordeaux, originally purchased in Switzerland by a businessman in the 1970s and 80s.

These include a case of 12 bottles of Chateau Valoux, 1982, Graves Leogan, estimate €80-€120; case 12 bts Chateau Haut Brion, 1970, Premier Grand Cru, €500-€800; case 12 bts Chateau Lafitte, 1982, Loguens Bordeaux Superior, €150-€250; and a case of 12 bts Chateau de Camensac, 1970, Haut Medoc, €300-500.

Other lots include a case of 12 bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1970, Grand Cru Classe EN1855, estimate €700-€1,200; case 12 bts Grand Vin de Leoville, 1970, du Marquis de Lascases, St Julien, Medoc, €400-€700; case 12 bts Chateau Latour, 1985, Bordeaux Superieur, mis en bouteilles au chateau, €700-€1,200.
