Sting & John Mellencamp surprise Billy Joel at MSG

Billy Joel’s surprise guests at his sold-out MSG show Tuesday night included pals John Mellencamp — who performed his hit “Crumblin’ Down” — and Sting, who played Joel’s obscure ’86 tune “Big Man on Mulberry Street.”

That was the number Sting sang on Nov. 17, when the “Piano Man” legend was presented with the ASCAP Centennial Award.

“I recently saw my friend Sting’s musical,” Joel quipped from the stage. “It’s amazing — it’s called ‘The Last Ship,’ and you need to go see it.”

Joel added that the show has inspired him to write music for Broadway, too.

Meanwhile, Sting, who is joining the cast of “The Last Ship” next month, also escorted Meryl Streep backstage at the Neil Simon Theatre on Tuesday night to meet his fellow thespians.

And the former Police man still wasn’t done for the night: He later joined the cast in Herald Square to rehearse for their spot in Thursday’s 88th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Sting and the cast — including Jimmy Nail, whom Sting is replacing Dec. 9 through Jan. 10 — performed “Show Some Respect” from the musical.
