David Moyes has added further Scottish influence to the Real Sociedad coaching staff with the appointment of Billy McKinlay.

Manager Moyes made Sociedad his first club since Manchester United a fortnight ago and on Saturday took charge of his first game as they drew with Elche.

He has now moved to add the experienced McKinlay as his assistant coach, with the 45-year-old confirmed in the role on the club's official website.

A former Scotland midfielder, McKinlay had a brief spell in charge of Watford earlier this season, while he has also served on the coaching staffs of Fulham and Northern Ireland.

Sociedad's website added that McKinlay completed Moyes' staff, which also consists of coach Asier Santana, strength coach Karla Larburu and goalkeeping coach Roberto.

McKinlay left his job as Northern Ireland assistant manager to take over at Watford but was bizarrely sacked just eight days in having taken four points from two matches.

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill did not immediately replace McKinlay, instead co-opting Irish FA staffers Jim Magilton and Stephen Robinson to help him prepare for Euro 2016 qualifiers against Greece, the Faroe Islands and Romania.

McKinlay would have been welcomed back into the fold had he been able to offer a guarantee of seeing the job through for the remainder of the campaign but a desire to get back to the day-to-day involvement of club coaching meant that was unlikely.

With Moyes offering him the chance to join his backroom team, Northern Ireland are now likely to appoint a permanent deputy to O'Neill.

Magilton performed the role at Shamrock Rovers but the IFA may deem his work as elite performance director takes priority, while youth coach Robinson is known to be keen on the role.
