BJP President Amit Shah denied permission to hold rally in Kolkata

BJP wanted to hold the meeting in front of Victoria House in downtown Kolkata

Kolkata: BJP President Amit Shah was denied permission to hold a rally in Kolkata on November 30, the city corporation said on Thursday.

The BJP wanted to hold the meeting in front of Victoria House in downtown Kolkata, the usual venue for the Trinammol Congress to observe its annual July 21 martyr's day rally. But the police administration declined to give clearance citing reasons of traffic congestion and law and order issues.

BJP had applied for the permission as early as July.

The party had retorted that it was a political move since November 30 was a Sunday and the reasons cited by the police would not hold water.

Subsequently, the BJP had moved to the Calcutta High Court challenging the decision.

BJP has asked the court to rule in its favour but the judges said that the party must first seek clearances from local fire safety officials and the city corporation.
