New Delhi: German car major BMW has launched the performance oriented M3 sedan and the M4 coupe in India at an event held in Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida. Cricketing legend and BMW's brand ambassador for India, Sachin Tendulkar unveiled the new BMW M-Series cars at the ongoing BMW Experience Tour 2014 event at the Buddh International Circuit.

Besides sporting different body styles, both are essentially the same cars. Unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show earlier this year, the new M3 and M4 are already on sale in several nations. To make the new M3 saloon lighter, responsible and high on performance, magnesium and carbon-fiber parts and high-tensile steel have been used in its manufacturing.

Powering both the cars is a new 3.0-litre in-line six cylinder engine featuring twin-scroll turbochargers. The 2979cc engine produces a maximum output of 431 hp at 5500-7300 rpm and 550Nm of peak torque at 1850-55020 rpm. Power goes to the rear wheels and propels the cars in the 0-100kmph sprint in just 4.1 seconds with standard 6-speed manual transmission and even 3.9 seconds with the optional 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission. Top whack is restricted to 250kmph or 280kmph if the M Driver Package is specified.

The cars ship with 18-inch wheels shod with 255/40 and 275/40 section tyres (F/R). The 7-speed dual clutch transmission and active suspension is offered as standard.

In terms of styling, the M3 is based on the 3-series and the M4 on the 4-series. Standard features include BMW idrive with touch controller, Navigation professional with 22.35 cm colour display with 3D maps, BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific views, Park Distance Control (PDC) rear and front along with rear view camera.

Both the models come with M Carbon roof which gives them lower-slung look, reduces overall weight and lowers the centre of gravity - for even sportier driving, BMW said.

The interiors of both the models are dominated by numerous hallmark BMW M elements such as M entry sills, M footrest, M gearshift lever and M circular dials.

Safety features include air bags, Active M Differential, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) including M Dynamic mode, and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).

“When developing a new model we first think about what requirements the vehicle will be expected to meet, and then decide which concepts and technologies will best meet these goals,” Albert Biermann, Head of Development BMW M GmbH said during the launch.

In order to maximize dynamic ability and ensure better efficiency, weight savings of around 63 kilograms have been achieved over its predecessor.

The M3 and M4 will take on the new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG (coming next year) and V6 Jaguar F-Type in the sedan and coupe battle.
