Five children drown in a pond in Uttar Pradesh

Five children drowned on Thursday after they fell into a pond in Chandan Chowki area here, police said.

Lakhimpur Kheri: Five children drowned on Thursday after they fell into a pond in Chandan Chowki area here, police said.

The incident took place this morning when the children along with their family members were returning home in a bullock cart after visiting a local fair.

At Pongla nullah, when the cart driver attempted to make the bullocks drink water from the pond, the kids in the cart lost balance and slipped, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Pallia-Martand Prakash Singh said.

The bodies were later fished out of the pond with the help of locals.

The five kids were identified as Sanjay (15), Karina (10), Nirjala (10), Nirmala (8) and Phoola (12).S

All of them belonged to tribal Tharu families of Surma forest village on the Indo-Nepal border.
