GCDA in trouble over pregnant cow
KOCHI: The state animal welfare board (AWB) has asked Ernakulam district collector M G Rajamanickam to take appropriate action against those who brought a pregnant cow for slaughter to the abattoir, which belongs to Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), in Kaloor.
The cow had given birth to a calf two days back. AWB has also asked the city police to file a complaint against GCDA officials.
Referring to the TOI report on November 25, AWB wrote a complaint to the collector on Wednesday, asking him to initiate action against GCDA authorities.
AWB has also asked the collector to inspect the slaughterhouse behind Gokulam Park that belongs to GCDA.
TOI had reported that the cattle brought for slaughter was treated cruelly by employees at the slaughterhouse. They are neither given food or water and have been found eating clothes and plastic waste. Bringing a pregnant cow for slaughter is violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
"When I contacted GCDA officials, they said that they don't have a veterinary doctor at the abattoir. If they had a doctor, these kind of incidents would not have happened," said M N Jayachandran, member of AWB. AWB has also sent a complaint to deputy commissioner of police R Nishanthini demanding that the police file a case against concerned authorities.
