The Versova police on Wednesday arrested a person in connection with a theft case after a complaint was filed against him by his tenant.

According to the complaint filed by Karan Singh, a real estate agent in Andheri, the owner of his office allegedly took Rs2.75 lakh, two laptops and one mobile phone from his office located at Mhada's Saisidhi co-operative society in Four Bungalows, Andheri (W), on Tuesday afternoon.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Singh had taken the office premises on rent from Sabri in February 2014 for 11 months by paying Rs50,000 deposit and monthly rental of Rs16,500. However, on Tuesday, Singh alleged that when he went to his office along with his friend Amit Soni, he was shocked to see his board removed and locks broken. He also told the police that when he went inside he found that Rs2.75 lakh kept by his mother Babita, two laptops and a mobile phone were missing. Babita, who runs an NGO, also used the office premises and had kept the money there.

"During investigation we have come to know that Singh had defaulted in payment of rent for three months and hence Sabri had taken back the place by replacing the lock of the office," said an officer from Versova police station. He added: "When we asked Singh, he admitted that there was a delay in payment of rent but he had handed over the rent to Sabri's agent a few days back."

The police on the basis of the complaint arrested Sabri and booked him for theft. "We have arrested Sabri and are verifying the facts of the case," said A Rane, senior police inspector. "We will be verifying the claims made by Singh," Rane added.
