Former SC judge C K Prasad new PCI chairman
NEW DELHI: Former Supreme Court judge Justice C K Prasad has been appointed as the chairperson of the Press Council of India (PCI). He will succeed Justice Markandey Katju whose three-year term ended in October. Prasad’s appointment has been cleared by a three-member committee headed by Vice-President Hamid Ansari. “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of Section 5 of the Press Council Act, 1978 (37 of 1978), the Central Government hereby notifies the nomination of Justice C K Prasad, retired Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chairman of the Press Council of India,” the government said Wednesday. Woman gangraped by husband, two more
Rampur (UP): A woman was allegedly raped by her husband and two of his friends in Bilaspur area, following which a case has been registered against the three, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place on November 17 when the woman was returning home. Her husband and his friends abducted her and took her to a secluded house in Bareilly, police said. She was intoxicated through an injection, following which the three took turns to rape her. The victim and her husband have a strained relationship and have a domestic dispute case pending in the court, police added. PTI
Heroin worth Rs 105 crore seized in Punjab
Chandigarh: Punjab police arrested five people and seized 21 kg heroin, having a street value of Rs 105 crore, from their possession in Bathinda. On the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, the counter intelligence wing of the Punjab Police intercepted a gang smuggling contraband from Pakistan to Ghadsana border in Rajasthan, Bathinda zone IGP (counter intelligence) Dr Jitendra Jain said and added that 21 packets of heroin, three Pakistani SIM cards, six mobile phones and Rs 1.10 lakh was seized from their possession, following which they were arrested. Shot at for marrying outside community
Meerut: A 25-year-old woman was shot at allegedly by her brothers and an accomplice at Sivaya village here, for marrying outside her community, police said. The attack took place on Tuesday when the two brothers — Nijamuddin and Furkan — along with their friend Shahid, went to meet their sister Furkani at her house. Four years ago Furkani had married Ravindra who belonged to another community, despite opposition from her family, Daurala police field officer Brijesh Kumar said. The couple was residing in Deoband and came back to Sivaya village two months back with the hope that the situation would be normal after four years. One accused has been arrested while efforts are on to nab the other two who are absconding, police said. Furkani has been admitted to a hospital and her condition is stated to be serious. PTI
6 injured in clash with police in Bengal
Siliguri (WB): Six people were injured and a police vehicle was set on fire during a clash with local residents who were protesting against the setting up of an electric crematorium at Ramghat here on Wednesday. Trouble began when the local people, who launched a relay hunger strike on Tuesday fearing environmental pollution, congregated at the spot on Wednesday morning to continue their agitation. Police said when they tried to evacuate the protesters, the protesters assaulted a policeman. At this, police resorted to lathicharge. During the clash six people were injured, police said. The situation was brought under control by policemen and RAF was deployed, police said. PTI
