Work begins to install 80 cameras at suicide hotspot Bandra-Worli Sea Link

The MEPL, which is now in charge of the sea link’s maintenance and toll collection, is installing the surveillance cameras.

After several suicide bids and severe criticism for being a soft target due to  lack of sufficient security, installation of surveillance cameras has now begun on the Mumbai’s landmark Bandra-Worli Sea Link to cover it from all angles. The sea link, which was opened to traffic in 2009, has become a suicide destination with eight people having attempted to jump off the bridge.

A total of 80 surveillance cameras are being installed on the structure after much dithering and several rounds of correspondences between the Mumbai Police and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Till now, the 5.6-km structure had only six CCTV cameras that would at best produce grainy images.

“The installation of cameras began about a week ago and will be completed within a month. There are a total of 80 cameras, 65 on the top of the structure and 15 for surveillance from under the sea-link,” said an MSRDC official.

The MSRDC decided to install 80 CCTV cameras — a combination of fixed surveillance cameras, rotating surveillance cameras and those that can zoom in — last December. The decision was taken after consultation with the Mumbai Police about the specifications. The actual installation, however, was delayed as the MSRDC was in the process of awarding a fresh contract for toll collection and maintenance of the sea link.

In September, the Bombay High Court, while acting on a public interest litigation, had sent a notice to the MSRDC on the lack of adequate security on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The latter had informed the court that it would set up additional surveillance cameras on the structure within 60 days.

Festive offer

The Mumbai Entry Point Ltd (MEPL), which is now in charge of the sea link’s maintenance and toll collection, is installing the surveillance cameras. “We will get a monitoring feed. The company can also make a feed available to the police as per their request,” said the MSRDC official.
