Mumbai: Shiv Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced the Sena president Uddhav Thackeray’s photography-book titled ‘Maharashtra Desha’ as reference material in primary level classes of municipal schools. The book, Maharashtra Desha, is a compilation of Uddhav’s aerial photographs that provide a glimpse into the cultural fabric, physical beauty and historical perspective of the state, and was released on the 50th anniversary of the state in 2010. Rahul Shewale, Shiv Sena MP and former standing committee chairman of BMC had demanded in 2012 to provide the book in the municipal schools. Subsequently, the proposal was placed before the book selection committee of BMC for its consideration. Now, the BMC has bought the 1168 copies of the book that are being distributed in the primary municipal schools.

Municipal administration has stated that the book can be useful for the teachers for reference purposes and would help students understand the historical places of the state.

“The forts and historical places are included in the syllabus of the primary schools. But, most of the students from Mumbai are unaware of these historical places. This book will be helpful in providing information about these places. Also, it will be an inspirational book and guide for the students who are interested in the photography as a profession,” said municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte.

Officials from the Education department of the BMC said that the books have been bought at the discounted rates due to the quantity but refused to provide the exact cost incurred on its purchase.

“The book shows the rich heritage, culture and tradition of Maharashtra through the pictures. After seeing the pictures, one will realize that the picture speaks louder than words. The excellent photography and precise information makes it appropriate to have this book as a reference book in the library,” said Shewale.

Currently, BMC is ruled by the Shiv Sena-BJP combine with Sena as the major partner. With an annual budget of over Rs. 31,000 crore, the BMC is believed to be the richest civic body in Asia, larger than many small Indian state government budgets including Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Utttarakhad, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and others.

However, BJP leaders, miffed with the decision of purchasing over 1000 books, refused to talk on the issue referring to the current political scenario in the state and said that it would create a controversy. “We have been asked to restrain our criticism of Shiv Sena in the municipal corporation. But, there was no need to purchase so many books. The citizens’ money should be utilized judiciously,” said a senior BJP corporator.
