Upa Lokayukta Justice Shashidhar Bheemrao Majage conducted surprise inspection at the cheque section in the office of the Chief Accounts Officer (CAO) at Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) head office. The contractors who were present at the office during the time of Upa Lokayukta visit complained that they have not received payments of works executed last year.
Mr. Majage inspected the files and other documents at the office, questioned officials and pointed out a few lapses in issuing of a few cheques. The Upa Lokayukta also took a few officials to task in this regard.
The contractors also informed the Upa Lokayukta that seniority is not maintained by BBMP while releasing the cheque payments for various works executed. They alleged that corruption reigned supreme in the BBMP and urged him to question the CAO and other senior officials.
A civil contractor, on condition of anonymity, told The Hindu that some cheques are cleared due to influence from political leaders.
