Family life takes its toll on the health of around two thirds of adults in the South East, while over a third feel their blood boil when they argue with their partner and 33% are driven to distraction by general family stress, according to the new Braun Blood Pressure Survey. The new Braun survey, conducted from a UK panel containing over 1,000 adults aged 18 to 80, asked people what makes them feel that their blood pressure is rising – and concluded that the vast majority attribute stress at home and also, for those in the working age bracket, life’s stresses make the difference to their sense of control and wellbeing.

With 76% of people in the South East perceiving that personal issues have a direct effect on blood pressure levels, family arguments, money worries and small tense moments, such whether the children or grandchildren are ill or in trouble, seem to cause the vast majority of the most stressful situations for residents in the South East.
For those in the workplace, 37% of South Easteners declared that traffic problems and delays left them both dejected and stressed and two thirds commented on pressure in the workplace itself, including difficult office politics, bullying and unrealistic deadlines.

Because of the stresses and strains of life in general, 76% of those surveyed have actively sought to have their blood pressure tested, mostly at their GP surgery, whether done by the GP (43%) or the Practice Nurse (43%).  Only 14% of those surveyed had measured their own blood pressure, despite regular advice to invest in a home blood pressure monitor.  The best method advised by the Department of Health is to check blood pressure every day at around the same time, to be able to identify a clear measurement pattern and then take the appropriate action if it shows consistent abnormalities.

Despite this, only 30% of people surveyed in the South East, % accepted that measuring blood pressure is important, which exposes the issue that people are not looking after themselves sufficiently and reading the signs that all is not well.  The survey revealed that 66% of people know that they have a direct genetic link to close family members with blood pressure issues, but are still not taking the right precautions to avoid the end consequences, which could lead to heart attack, stroke or the onset of diabetes. Blood pressure is a silent enemy – the only way to know is to measure it.
This important survey demonstrates the need for a better understanding of how to manage blood pressure and when to act – not just once, but on a regular basis.
