Carragher: Liverpool defence needs protection and Gerrard isn’t the man to provide it

Jamie Carragher thinks a change of position could help both Steven Gerrard and Liverpool

Jamie Carragher believes that Steven Gerrard should be moved from his current midfield position for Liverpool to best utilise their captain and improve on their current form.

The Reds have yet to win in November after suffering four successive defeats and on Sunday they slumped to a 3-1 loss away to Crystal Palace despite taking an early lead.

Brendan Rodgers has said that his job isn't safe and former Liverpool player Carragher believes that his old team-mate should be moved from his current role at the base of the midfield diamond in front of a leaky defence.

"Teams are man-marking him," he said on Monday Night Football.

"Over the years he has had a relationship with Michael Owen, Torres, Suarez and Sturridge," before suggesting that he does not possess such an understanding with Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert or Fabio Borini.

"He is not giving a lot going forward because of those options," he admitted.

"This team needs protection and Stevie is not a great protector of the defence because he is in that position because of different reasons."
