Johannesburg - Gauteng police on Tuesday dismissed claims of a hostage drama unfolding in Capital Park, Pretoria, saying it was an attempted suicide.
"It was not a hostage situation," said police spokesperson Tsekiso Mofokeng.
"A 40-year-old intoxicated man was reported by community members as walking into his house with a firearm."
Police were then alerted.
When officers arrived on the scene, they heard gunshots from inside the house.
"Police gained entry and disarmed the man, who had shot himself."
Mofokeng could not say how many times he was wounded.
The man was taken to hospital. No one else was injured.
