MANGALURU: The Thangal Uppappa Uroos Committee will be held at Muhiyuddeen Juma Masjid at Nellikunnu, Kasargod, some 60-kms from here from December 10 to 20. The committee has drawn up plans to distribute more than 1-lakh ghee rice packets to devotees on final day of the event on December 21 to mark culmination of this religious event that is held biennially.
More than 10,000 devotees are expected to attend the event each day.
N A Nellikunnu, Kasargod MLA and general secretary of the uroos committee told reporters here that Thangal Uppappa is held in highest reverence by his devotees who are spread across caste, creed and religion. It is a fact that a majority of the thangal’s devotees are non-Muslims and people flock to the masjid throughout the year to seek favours from the thangal, whom he described as a super-human, with lot of followers in Karnataka as well.
Religious sermons by eminent scholars from Karnataka and Kerala will be held on each day of the uroos at night, Nellikunnu said, adding that the uroos is an opportunity for the devotees to pay their respect to his sacred memory. The committee has already taken up various measures to ensure the smooth conduct of this event, Nellikunnu said, adding that it is bracing for a large influx of devotees from various parts of Kerala and Karnataka.
Asked about the pitiable state of National Highway that connects this coastal city with Kasargod, where this masjid is located, Nellikunnu said Kerala CM has already urged the central government to release funds for the repair of this road. “Chief engineer of NH division of Kerala is presently in Delhi for this very purpose. As per information given by him, repair works on this stretch of NH will start in two weeks,” the MLA said.
