Minnesota Workers Taking Time to Give Thanks and Give Back

ST. PAUL, Minn. - As families across Minnesota prepare to give thanks, the holiday season has hundreds of state employees giving back to the towns and neighborhoods in which they live and work.

The community service volunteer effort is being led by the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE). The association's Ashley Erickson says state workers are taking their own personal time to make a difference.

"They're taking vacation or using their personal paid time off to give back," she says. "This is just something they're choosing to do, and it speaks volumes about our state employees who are willing to take their personal time off and give back locally."

Projects through MAPE's Community Service Days have included packaging food for Feed My Starving Children and helping build a home with Habitat for Humanity.

The home building was done by a crew of women from MAPE Local 801, which represents workers with the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

Victoria Hopwood, president of MAPE Local 801, says it's about filling a need in the community.

"We feel it's important since we're blessed with jobs and have benefits," she says, "We need to give back where we see a void. We can't do everything, but a little bit at a time helps."

Hopwood says while the union's efforts are centered around the holidays, they're looking to expand and form ongoing partnerships with community groups and organizations.
