The Original Miss Everdene Returns in 'Far From the Madding Crowd' Trailer

Long before there was Katniss Everdeen, there was Bathsheba Everdene.

The classic literary heroine who inspired the name of author Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games tribute will return to the big screen in May’s Far From the Madding Crowd. It’s the first major big-screen adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 1874 novel in nearly 50 years, the last being a 1967 version starring Julie Christie. The 2015 edition stars Carey Mulligan (who also sings over the trailer) as the independently minded Bathsheba, while Michael Sheen, Matthias Schoenaerts and Tom Sturridge co-star as her trio of ardent suitors.

The film, which you can get a first look at in the trailer above, is directed by Thomas Vinterberg, the Danish helmer behind the Oscar-nominated 2013 drama The Hunt.

From the Madding Crowd opens in theaters May 1, 2015.
