LAHORE: Former Jamaat-i-Islami chief Syed Munawar Hasan said on Monday that jihad for a holy cause was the only permissible violence for Muslims in the name of religion. He said violence in pursuit of personal glory, ambition or nationalism was mischief.

He was talking to reporters at Mansoora.

He said the believers had been instructed in the Holy Quran to keep their horses ready against the enemy.

“The idea is that Muslims should never be caught unawares,” he said.

Hasan said those protesting over his statements on the issue were making futile efforts to mislead the masses and spreading hatred.

The former JI chief said those interpreting his statements the wrong way deserved pity.

“Had people understood the real power of Jihad, they would not have attempted a confrontation with the believers,” he said.

He said the NATO attack on Silala check post had been an attack primarily on Pakistan Army.

He said the operation in Abbotabad had also been an attempt to malign the armed forces of Pakistan.

He said western powers had tried to take on Islam as a force and had failed.

He said the US withdrawal from Afghanistan was testament to the fact that foreign powers could not sustain a drawn out conflict with Islam.

Hasan said during the 1965 war, then president Ayub Khan had stated that the enemy had thrown a challenge to Muslims and followers of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).

He said that during natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes, thousands of JI workers had been in the forefront to provide help and succour to the affected people.

“That, too, is jihad,” he said.
