Ireland’s Roisin McGettigan will be presented with a bronze medal for the 1500m at the 2009 European Indoor Athletics Championships at Wednesday’s National Athletics Awards following the suspension imposed on Anna Alminova of Russia for a doping offence.

Alminova crossed the line first in Turin, but has had all her results since February 2009 cancelled and has been given a 30-month suspension due to irregularities in her biological passport.

Athletics Ireland was officially informed in October by European Athletics that a replacement medal would be made available for presentation to the Wicklow woman.

Spain’s Natalia Rodríguez will now be awarded the gold for the race.

McGettigan, who has retired from the sport, will travel from her home in Rhode Island in the United States to receive her medal.

Athletics Ireland chief executive John Foley said: “It is right and fitting that Roisin is given an opportunity to celebrate her medal-winning performance.

“Roisin was a top quality international athlete who competed for Ireland with distinction for many years, including at the Olympic Games, as well as being an Irish record holder and now as a recorded European medallist.”
