MADURAI: The
water level in the
Mullaperiyar dam has started receding as more water is being drawn to the
Vaigai dam.
The water level stood at 140.90 feet with a storage of 7,369 mcft (million cubic feet) on Monday morning, the public works department (PWD) said.
While the inflow to the reservoir was 1,014 cusecs, as much as 2,100 cusecs of water was discharged from the dam.
PWD sources said more water was being drawn from the Mullaperiyar dam after water was released from the Vaigai dam for irrigation in Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts.
The water level at the Vaigai dam was at 41.81 feet with a storage capacity of 1,104 mcft on Monday. The inflow to the dam was considerable 2,134 cusecs augmented by the water from the Mullaperiyar dam.
As much as 3,060 cusecs of water was being released from dam for irrigation and drinking water needs.
The Mullaperiyar dam touched 142 feet on Friday morning. The catchment areas have been receiving very little rain since then.
