Jacoby & Justice Lead Cobbers At Finn Grinaker Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/22/14)--- Jacoby Bergeron and Justice Davis led a contingent of 25 Concordia wrestlers who competed in the 16th annual Finn Grinaker Cobber Open hosted by CC. Bergeron and Davis both posted runner-up finishes in the Gold Division of the tournament.

Concordia welcomed wrestlers from eight different schools around the region. The competing teams ran the gamut from ranked NCAA Division I teams to NAIA regional teams. The tournament was separated into two divisions. The Gold Division was for returning upperclassmen while the Maroon Division was for freshman and first-year collegiate wrestlers.

The Cobbers had 14 athletes compete in the Gold Division and another 11 newcomers wrestle in the Maroon Division. Concordia had 15 of their 25 wrestlers post top 5 finishes and had five wrestlers earn second-place honors.

Bergeron completed one of the most grueling seven-day periods of wrestling in program history. A week after wrestling eight times in one day at the Dakota Wesleyan Open, Bergeron fought through another five matches at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open. Bergeron went 4-1 at 141 and placed second. His only loss was against Thomas Thorn from No.2-ranked University of Minnesota. Bergeron posted wins against Josh Shupe from Minnesota, NCAA Division II wrestlers Alec Lindsey of Mary and Philippe Walker of MSU Moorhead and NAIA athlete Anthony Kifer of Jamestown.

Bergeron finished his warrior-like seven-day period with a 10-3 record. He is now 14-6 in the first 14 days of the season. His 20 matches wrestled this season are more than 19 different CC wrestlers competed in during all of last season.

Davis continues to make an impact in his sophomore season in the 285-pound weight class. After spending his freshman year as an understudy to All-American Cody Kasprick, Davis has shined brightly in the starting spotlight. He opened the year by placing third at the NDSU Bison Open. He then won his bout in the team's dual win over MSU Moorhead and followed that with a 3-2 record at the Dakota Wesleyan Open last weekend. On Saturday he rolled to three straight wins to open the meet. He won by a 10-3 decision over Jerrad Neiland of NDSU. He then earned a sudden victory decision over Caleb White in the quarterfinals before beating Nader Abdulllatif of MSU Moorhead in the semifinals. His only loss on the day was to Austin Goergen of St. Cloud State. The Huskies are currently ranked fifth in Division II and Goergen is the third-ranked wrestler at 285 in NCAA Division II.

Davis is the second member of the Cobbers to have a double-digit season win total this year. He is now 10-4 for the season.

The Cobbers had three freshmen finish in second place in the Maroon Division. Aaron Senne, Alexi Bode and Jacob Johnson all had runner-up finishes in their first Finn Grinaker. Senne went 2-1 at 141 while Bode was 3-1 at 157 and Johnson was 2-1 at 165.

Senne started the day with a technical fall in the quarterfinals and then beat Tanner Crissler of Minot State 8-7 in the semifinals. Senne lost a hard fought 12-6 decision in the championship bout to Tyler Pasvogel of St. Cloud State.

Bode posted three wins on the day. He had victories over wrestlers from Minot State, Jamestown and Northland with his only loss coming to Travis Holt of SCSU.

Johnson had a pair of wins over athletes from North Dakota State and Jamestown. His only defeat was also at the hands of a wrestler from St. Cloud State. Johnson lost 7-4 in the title bout against Vince Deitz.

Concordia will now have a much-needed rest for the Thanksgiving holiday break. The Cobbers will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3 when they travel to Jamestown, N.D. to take on the University of Jamestown in a dual meet at 5:30 p.m.
