Serbian tennis player Jelena Jankovic, who is in Mumbai to play the Champions Tennis League matches at Kalina, slipped away for a few hours to shop on Colaba Causeway on Sunday.

All for the daughter

There are divas and there are divas. Last Thursday, your diarist was surprised to see all lanes leading to Hema Malini’s Juhu residence sealed. When we asked around, we were told Madame H was installing a huge bathtub on her terrace. And a huge crane was deployed outside her gate to lift the bathtub. The entire exercise lasted two hours. Hema later told your diarist: “I am sorry if motorists had a problem while commuting in my lane on Thursday night. You see, I am setting up a Jacuzzi on the terrace.” The Dream Girl, now a consummate politician, said this was for the benefit of daughter Esha and her husband Bharat, who happen to come over on most weekends. “They love the Jacuzzi. And I want to give them whatever comfort they want.” What do we say.

Art of giving

We had told you last week how the second Kochi biennale was facing some fund crunch at the last minute. Well, news comes in that Delhi-based artist Vivan Sundaram and his art-historian wife Geeta Kapur have donated Rs 40 lakh. The couple’s donation comes at a time when the Foundation is raising capital for the 108-day event, since the Kerala Government has significantly delayed the promised funds. Incidentally, Sundaram’s 2012 installation using discarded pottery shards from central Kerala’s Pattanam excavations recaptured the mood of the lost port city at the debut Kochi- Muziris Biennale. The installation, titled Black Gold, became the talking point at the KMB 2012. The septuagenarian, whose show Postmortem (after Gagawaka) opens at Chemould Prescott Road this Wednesday, said one could presume the strain behind putting together an event of the scale of the biennale Meanwhile, the Foundation hopes that the gesture from Kapur and Sundaram will convince people to extend their support towards the Biennale. We hope so, too.

Eat, love...

Katrina Kaif was quite a vision in an Anamika Khanna ensemble at Arpita Khan’s wedding. And it was not just her sartorial choice, but her svelte new form that drew compliments. The actress, who put on the kilos due to a shoulder injury, and weighed 68 kilos at one point, has dropped the excess flab (!) for her ongoing film. And from what we hear, besides working out religiously, she has been on a macro-biotic diet, eating out of a special dabba that reaches her every two hours. That’s how you get the country’s most eligible star eating out of your hands, eh?

Tailpiece

It’s not often that authors invite readers to reinterpret their works (some perhaps even get ulcers at the very idea). Which is why, Stephen Fry — writer, comedian, actor and a popular voice on the British radio — comes across as a refreshing change. To mark the publication of his memoir, which is being published by Penguin Random House, Fry is calling for reinterpretations of his books (More Fool Me and The Fry Chronicles) and his life by anyone and in any form — you can convert it into a film, a cellphone app, even a 3D model if you wish. And the best part? The challenge, called YourFry, will accept entries in any language. Fry’s Mumbai fans are a little miffed, though. While the publishing house has announced brainstorming sessions in Delhi and Bangalore, we have been left out. Fry, we hear, is part of an expert panel that will select the best entry (last date for putting your best creative foot forward is December 1) and the winner will be announced close to the New Year. What better way to start 2015?

PS: Samantha Nayar, who made a stylish appearance at Roohi Jaikishan’s fashionable dinner at a SoBo eatery last week, has had a bit of an accident we hear. Nayar had a fall while out jogging in London, and fractured her arm. The injury has not chipped her spirit though, and she was there to support her friends who were doing their bit for charity that evening.
