I was watching the Packers defeat the Vikings this afternoon and my jaw dropped after seeing an ad for Cialis air during the game which played in the early afternoon. I've seen those ads (and similar ones for Viagra) air at times even liberal old me considers inappropriate for young viewers. And during a football game broadcast on an over the air station in the early afternoon when families are watching together, it seems very inappropriate.

I am not a prude, but there seems to be a line crossed here in terms of what is appropriate for children to view and hear. I don't mind that the ads talk about sex as a normal activity and warn men to seek medical attention if an erection lasts more than 4 hours, but I'm not sure that little kids should be exposed to it and the questions that it raises.
It's not like it's easy to avoid that ad, either, as the football game is a family event. If it aired during a later evening prime time show, I wouldn't bat an eyelash. Kids aren't watching then (they should be tucked into bed).
But at 2 in the afternoon, I can imagine 5 year old Timmy asking his parents about what an erection is after being exposed to that ad. Children know more than their parents think they do, but ads like this give them far more information than they should have at that young an age.
Naturally, the "family values" crowd have been silent on the subject. I suspect that this is because a mega corporation (drug company) is profiting from the sale of outrageously priced penis pills. If not, marching orders would have gone out to gin up pearl clutching, phony outrage, and "think of the children" talking points.
The FCC used to have rules about content of programs at times when children would be viewers. Sadly, the FCC has been overtaken by industry insiders just like other federal agencies and now serve to protect their corporate overlords from regulation, responsibility, and accountability rather than protecting citizens from powerful corporations and their excesses.
This can be seen in the long drawn-out "debate" over Net Neutrality, which shouldn't even be an issue at all. It's become an issue because internet providers see additional profits in charging more for better and faster access to the internet. Already charging the highest rates in the industrialized world while providing internet services among the slowest and least reliable, ISPs want to gouge even more from our pockets.
When the foxes guard all the chicken coops, who protects the chickens? Or the children?
