Democratic Party president Norbert Mao has described the opposition triumph in the just concluded Amuru Woman Member of Parliament by-election as an experiment of the opposition unity in liberating the country.

While addressing a press conference at Café Larem Guest house in Gulu town at the weekend, Mr Mao said decisions made by Uganda Peoples Congress Party, Democratic Party and Forum for Democratic Change to front a single candidate in the by-election helped the Opposition in securing the seat.

The opposition under their umbrella body, Interparty Coalition, IPC, fronted Ms Lucy Akello of FDC to contest against her rival NRM’s Jane Frances Amongin Okili for the Amuru Woman MP seat. “We have seen the great impact of the opposition unity, we should not stop with this alliance because other positions still need to be occupied by the opposition with the same unity tactic,” Mr Mao said.

He added that the opposition intends to file a formal alliance application at the Electoral Commission, which will enable them have a suitable name and logo for the joint opposition party.

“We are still making consultations both at the top and grassroot opposition structures on the frame work of the new idea. By January next year, we shall be able to declare publicly the frame work of the alliance,” added Mr Mao.
