Actor Callow to sign book on Dickens

Actor and author Simon Callow will take a break from staging an operatic version of "A Christmas Carol" to sign "Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World" Dec. 3 in the Wortham Theater Center.

The longtime Dickens enthusiast has written the libretto for the new setting of "A Christmas Carol" by British composer Iain Bell. Houston Grand Opera will premiere the work, a one-man show featuring tenor Jay Hunter Morris as a storyteller portraying all the roles, Dec. 5.

The opera company and Brazos Bookstore will co-host the Dec. 3 event, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Wortham Theater Center's Grand Foyer, 501 Texas. The Dickens book will be on sale for $16 plus tax.

HGO will collect gently used books for Books Between Kids, a nonprofit benefiting needy children, before each performance of "A Christmas Carol," which runs through Dec. 21. Details: 713-228-6737, houstongrandopera.org.
