4 motorcycle deaths in hit-and-runs

Ashok Kumar, a 45-year-old Delhi Police constable, was crushed to death by a truck near Southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji bus depot on Saturday night.

Police said Kumar, a head constable at the Badarpur police station, was returning home in Vikaspuri on his bike around 10 pm when he was hit by the truck.

The driver of the truck hit Kumar’s bike from behind while trying to overtake. Driver Sheeshpal, who tried to flee, and the helper were later arrested.

Police said the driver claimed he did not see the bike, which came under the truck’s front wheels. Kumar died on the spot.

Kumar is survived by his wife and three sons. One of his sons, aged 21, is a constable with the Seventh Battalion of Delhi Police. A case of rash driving has been registered against the truck driver. He has also been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, police said.

In another accident, two newspaper vendors, father and son, were crushed to death by a speeding car in North Delhi’s Model Town on Sunday morning.

Rajender Singh (52) and Piyush (21) were on their way to deliver newspapers on a bike when they were hit by the car. Both fell off the bike that skidded for over 100 metres before coming to a stop, police said. The driver of the car is yet to be arrested.

A police constable at the spot made a PCR call and rushed the two to hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival. “The car was travelling very fast and the constable was unable to note its registration number,” a police officer said.

Police said the car was a Honda City after examining its bumper that came off in the accident. Police are hopeful of identifying the driver soon.

In Outer Delhi’s Rithala, a 24-year-old woman was killed while her husband sustained serious injuries when a DTC bus hit their bike on Sunday morning. Savita was riding pillion with her husband Lalit when the bus rammed their bike from behind, police said.

Eyewitnesses told police the driver of the bus, which was carrying passengers, fled the spot. One of the passengers made a PCR call.

“The couple were going to their village in Haryana,” a police officer said. “We have sought details of the driver from DTC and will arrest him soon.”
