Earlier this week a right-wing outfit, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, opposed the screening of the Marathi film Elizabeth Ekadashi, at the 45th International Film Festival of India, in Goa.
A memorandum was sent to the Minster of Information and Broadcasting, IFFI organisers and the state-owned Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) to protest the use of the word Ekadashi in the film title, as it is a Hindu tithi.
However, amidst all the controversy , the film was screened to a full house at the festival on Saturday . Said Paresh Mokashi, director, My film was the opening film at the Indian Panorama. Though we received the letter, there were no protests at the venue. And nobody had turned up to stop the screening as well, which went smoothly . I am also surprised with the problem they had with the word Ekadashi. Even the organisers did not take any precautions regarding the same. Random people cannot come and stop the screening of films. We get the permission from the Supreme Court and also the Censor Board clears all films. So I did not understand what the problem was all about. The film is anyway being screened in Maharashtra, said Rajendra Talak, a member of IFFI and a Konkani film director.
