SRINAGAR : The border town of Kargil, going to polls on Tuesday, witnessed coldest night of the season after the mercury dropped to minus 10 degree while there was no let up from the chill in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where the minimum temperature remained sub zero.
Pahalgam, the famed health resort and Kupwara also recorded coldest night of the winter so far while Srinagar witnessed minus 1.2 degree minimum temperature, a Met department spokesman said here today. He said weather will remain dry during the next 72 hours with the result minimum temperature will remain below normal in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region. Kargil, a border town on national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, recorded coldest night of the winter so far when the minimum temperature dropped to minus 10 degree. The earlier coldest was minus 9.8 degree, recorded on November 20. All water bodies remained frozen in the district, going to polls on November 25 in the first phase alongwith three other constituencies of Nobra, Leh and Zanaskar.
Leh also witnessed drop in the minimum temperature as against minus 6.8 degree, recorded yesterday it was minus 9.3 degree, he said adding lowest so far was on November 21 when the mercury dropped to minus 10.3 degree. All water bodies were frozen in Pahalgam where the minimum temperature was minus 4.2 degree, more than two notches below normal. Water level in river Lidder has also dropped considerably as the snow had also frozen on the higher reaches, main source of the river. Kupwara a border district in north Kashmir, where upper reaches had snowfall last week, also recorded coldest night of the winter as the mercury dropped to minus 2.4 degree due to dry weather and clear sky. Earlier coldest was minus 1.4 degree, Met spokesman said.
Gulmarg, a world famous ski resort which still awaits major snowfall on slopes, recorded minus 1.4 degree minimum temperature though it was half a notch above normal. Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir and Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded minus 2.3 degree and minus 0.1 degree respectively, which was one to three degree below normal. Despite chill because of icy cold winds, shopkeepers and people were busy repairing and constructing their shops and houses, damaged in September devastating flood in the summer capital, Srinagar.
The mercury was minus 1.2 degree which was coldest so far also recorded on November 21 in Srinagar. It was two degree below normal.
