Parsi Gymkhana members' vehicles and an unauthorised motor garage are blocking the parking spot reserved for a Railways ambulance near Marine Drive railway station.

Because the ambulance has to be parked at a distance from the station, it takes longer for railway employees to take accident victims to hospital.

Haphazardly-parking cars blocked the ambulance

A railway official said, "There were many occasions when the driver was unable to move the ambulance due to haphazard parking in the entire area." The official said, "In the larger public interest, we park the ambulance at a distance."

Parsi Gymkhana's honorary joint secretary Minoo Khan said, "I don't think our members park vehicles in that area. Still, we would put up a notice on our notice board asking our members to avoid parking in that area."

Unauthorised garage in operation for many years

Moreover, local residents said that an unauthorised garage had been operating near the ambulance's spot for many years.

Suresh Jain, who lives in a nearby building, said, "The unauthorised garage is doing business for several years now. For unknown reasons, the police show a lack of interest in making that area a no-parking zone."

Railways want a no-parking zone

Sharat Chandrayan, Western Railway's chief public relation officer, said, "The railway official at Marine Lines station has written numerous letters to the police department to make that area a no-parking zone, but they are yet to take a call. Generally, the ambulance is parked in the earmarked parking spot. But whenever there is a party in Parsi gymkhana, we shift the ambulance little ahead so victims can be shifted to hospital immediately."

Authorities say

Baburao Mukhedkar, senior police inspector (traffic), Tardeo division, said "I will personally visit the location and take appropriate action. If there is a provision as per rules, we will certainly make that belt a no-parking zone, except for the ambulance".

Dr. Sangeeta Hasnale, assistant municipal commissioner, C ward, said "I will send a team of engineers at the site for inspection and necessary action immediately."
