Tollywoods fascination with storylines revolving around Lord Yama (the Hindi god of hell) goes back a long time. The success of films like Yamagola (1977), Yamudiki Mogudu (1988) and Yamaleela (1994) ushered in the genre of socio fantasy films that pit the protagonist against the venerable Lord Yama. However, director SV Krishna Reddy is quick to clarify, Yamaleela 2 isnt a sequel.
It is completely different from the original.
Yamaleela was the story of a young man (Ali),who finds a book belonging to Lord Yama.Yamaleela 2 is also based on a similar premise, but how the film plays out will be very different. The concept is perfect for a franchise and Im planning to make more films in this series, says the director.
Featuring debutantes KV Satish and Diah Nicolas in lead roles, the film has been produced by Asha Satish under Krishvi Films and is releasing on November 28. Mohan Babu is playing Lord Yama while Brahmanandam plays his assistant Chitragupta. What ensues when the duo come down to earth to take back the book forms the crux of the story.
The filmmaker admits to have tinkered with the mythological characters in his film to suit modern tastes. People loved the chemistry between NTR and Kaikala Satyanarayana in Yamagola so much that every time a new film came up with Yama as one of the characters, the expectations are high. Besides, Lord Yama has always been portrayed with a child-like innocence, although no one has ever dared to malign his dignity or magnificence.
Theres plenty of scope for some good-old humour, which was quite obvious in the scenes where Yama gets fascinated with ice-creams or Chitragupta about power cables. But then,we have to
move on with time and accept that Gods know everything about us. The Yama in Yamaleela 2 isnt so naive, after all. (laughs)
The filmmaker has no qualms in admitting that, Mohan Babu was the first choice to play Lord Yama.Theres no one in the industry, who can pull off this role as effectively as Mohan Babu does. Hes blessed with a great baritone and has commanding screen presence. The entire character has been designed keeping Mohan Babus personality in mind and you are bound to fall in ove with the character, SV Krishna Reddy signs off.
