Delhi BJP looks to Khattar for Munak canal water

To finalise the water release agreement, chief secretaries of both states are expected to meet in Chandigarh on November 26.

The felicitation ceremony planned by the Delhi BJP unit for Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on November 29 may have a major announcement in store. Delhi BJP sources said during the ceremony, Khattar is likely to announce that his state will release water into the Munak canal.

The announcement could become a major poll plank for the BJP as it will ensure water to the parched areas in South Delhi, especially Dwarka.

Sources said technicalities related to the release of 80 MGD (million gallons per day) of water into the Munak canal will be sorted at the meeting. A senior BJP leader said, “Hopefully, we will be able to supply water to Dwarka and other parts of  South Delhi before December 15, the day when model code of conduct is likely to come into effect.”

“An announcement from Khattar will boost the party’s chances of a victory in the capital since water has been the prime issue every election. The AAP won so many seats in December last year by promising a limit on free water to every household. Now, we will deliver it. The Congress had a government in Delhi and Haryana but, even then, Munak canal remained dry,” the leader said.
