Glenn Close and John Lithgow stage Mike Nichols tribute

Glenn Close and John Lithgow remembered Mike Nichols at the opening of their Broadway show “A Delicate Balance” Thursday.

At the end of the bows, Lithgow stepped forward and said everyone there had been thinking of director Nichols, who had come to see the play about 10 days before, and was “frail but enthusiastic” and said it was the best production of “A Delicate Balance” he had ever seen.

Bob Balaban told the audience, “He gave me my first Broadway role, my first movie role and my shrink.”

The stars of the show then led the entire audience in serenading Nichols, who died on Wednesday, with “Happy Trails,” which he had liked to sing at the end of work on a play or movie.
