A workshop on Good Governance in the Recruitment and Selection Processes ended for 125 senior civil servants in Suva early this month.

The training was conducted by The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Subhash Appana and Dr Desmond Amosa as lead facilitators, under the Australian-funded Pacific Islands Centre for Public Administration (PICPA) project, based at USP’s Laucala Campus.

PICPA is a specialist centre which responds to the needs and plans identified by Pacific Island Countries (PICs) for strengthened public administration to enable improved service delivery to their people and foster economic growth.

The workshop was the last of a series of five which was a result of the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) in June 2014 between Fiji’s Public Service Commission (PSC) and PICPA, to provide training workshops on Good Governance in Recruitment and Selection Processes for the Public Service.

Under the MOA, PSC has provided funding to the amount of $28,297.50 to PICPA to deliver these workshops over the remainder of the year.

The senior officials were presented with Certificates of Participation at the closing of the workshop by PICPA director Siosiua Utoikamanu.

PICPA was invited by the PSC to bid in the running of a series of five workshops for senior Government officials with the aim of:

– Exposing them to the best practices in human resource recruitment;

– Seeking clarifications on their roles and responsibilities in ensuring the practice of good governance in the human resources recruitment processes; and

– Providing a platform for discussions on collaborative actions in the best interests of the public service in this field.

Under the MOA, which was signed on June 25, 2014, both parties agreed to the following:

– A series of five workshops to be conducted;

– Workshop is based on the needs of PSC and delivered within the timeframe agreed;

– PSC timelines adhered to; and

– Appropriately qualified consultants and trainers are used.

The workshops were held on August 13-15, 20-22, October 6-9, October 15-17 and November 4-6, 2014.

The lead facilitators for the workshops were Mr Subhash Appanna and PICPA advisor Dr Desmond Amosa. Other PICPA advisors who assisted were Henry Khaisum and Iva Tavai.
