A tribute to Dadasaheb Phalke Award winning cinematographer V.K. Murthy, who passed away in April this year, was organised by Azim Premji University here on Friday.

Screening of Govind Nihalani’s documentary V.K. Murthy: A Journey Through Light and Shadows was followed by a panel discussion with Uma Rao, Kannada writer and Murthy’s biographer, and G.S. Bhaskar, cinematographer who has worked with directors such as Sai Paranjape, Girish Kasaravalli and M.S. Sathyu.

The documentary depicts Murthy’s genius through clippings of the cinematographer’s shots interspersed with his interview in which spoke of his association with actor-director Guru Dutt, with whom he “had a perfect understanding”.

Ms. Rao spoke of Murthy’s genius that shone through in Dutt’s films such as Pyaasa and Kaagaz ke Phool .
