The Russian-born artist Romain de Tirtoff, better known as Erté, documented lavish living in the early 20th century, a time when glamour was defined by luxurious gowns and even more elaborate accessories. These days, Erickson Beamon’s ornamental Swarovski-crystal-embellished gold-plated mask and Pottery Barn’s Paige chandelier would look right at home in an Erté etching. The artist, who would have turned 122 this weekend, left a lasting imprint on today’s fashions: A look from Rosie Assoulin’s fall 2014 collection has the voluminous silhouette and saturated colours he was famous for, while Rene Caovilla’s slingback heels – covered in lace and accented with rhinestones – are a testament to the enduring appeal of Roaring Twenties style.
