Chain-snatcher ends life in lock-up
VADODARA: A 22-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in police custody on Thursday in Limkheda taluka. The deceased, Sanjay Valchand, was a resident of Kharedi village in Dahod. Valchand was arrested in the afternoon over a chain-snatching incident in Limkheda. He was kept in Limkheda police station where he allegedly hung himself.
Valchand was accused in several chain-snatching cases.
Four cases of chain-snatching were reported against Valchand at Limdi, Jhalod, Limkheda and Dahod in the past. He was kept in a separate room in old police station behind Limkheda police station. The police said he was to be questioned over his involvement in a series of chain-snatchings.
However, Valchand hung himself from the lock-up ceiling before the cops could question him. The man tore cloth cover from an old mattress that was lying in the lock-up to commit suicide. A police constable was present near the room where he committed suicide but he didn't notice Valchand's act.
"There were four separate incidents of chain-snatchings reported against Valchand. In order to confirm his involvement, we used his mobile to track his location while he was doing the crime," said Limkheda police inspector, V K Kant.
Kant added that they were yet to recover the gold chains that were snatched by Valchand.
