Poor children are often violated
Visakhapatnam: Visakha Forum for Child Rights conducted a public meeting at Andhra University on Thursday on the occasion of 25 years since the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was signed by many countries across the world, including India.
At the meeting, Narava Prakash Rao, secretary for Bal Vikas Foundation, said that many corporate schools in Vizag are not providing admissions to children from economically weak families even though according to Right to Education Act mandates that 25 per cent of seats be reserved for such children.
VFCR convener, Prof R.D. Sampath Kumar spoke about the need for stronger and efficient legal intervention to protect children from their rights getting violated and to protect poor children from sexual abuse and trafficking.
Former vice-chancellor of Andhra University, who was also present for the meeting said that a Sub-Plan must be prepared at national level for the welfare of children.
At the meeting, D. Venkateswari, Integrated Child Development Services, Child Development Project Officer, D. Venkateswari spoke about the need to treat children as adults and listen to whatever they have to tell their parents rather than suppressing their views so as to make them feel empowered and develop their cognitive abilities.
