'Ghost In The Shell Online' FPS Finally Revealed

This article is more than 9 years old.

Nexon has at last revealed their Ghost in the Shell Online FPS at G-Star 2014 in Korea. The game is clearly based around the style and characters as seen in the Stand Alone Complex anime (rather than the manga or original films). This is not overly surprising as Nexon secured the rights for this from Kodansha back in 2012.

The original Ghost in the Shell started out as a manga, penned by the revered and mysterious Masamune Shirow. Set in a cyberpunk future, it dealt with the trials and tribulations of the government force known as Section 9 headed up by Motoko Kusanagi (shown above). Made up of a variety of cyborgs, they were tasked with fighting on the front-lines of a new and ever changing cyber war.

This is by no means the first Ghost in the Shell game we have been graced with, as the series also received games on the PSone, PSP and PS2. The latter two titles were more of a traditional first and third-person-shooter affair and rather bland with it. I much preferred the PSone game, as you got to play as a Fuchikoma from the manga. This meant you could slip and slide across all manner of surfaces like a giant mechanical spider.

This new FPS was originally meant to be released this year but all news of it disappeared until this new trailer surfaced (shown below). Currently it’s looking like this will be released on PC sometime next year.

The trailer shows a lot of gameplay and it’s clear that this will be a multiplayer FPS in a similar manner to that of the Syndicate FPS reboot, though hopefully done right this time around. Like in the manga and anime, players will be able to use “thermoptic” camouflage rendering them invisible. You’ll also be able to share skills between the different player classes as well as use various drone type mecha. Power armor will also be present too.

The end of the trailer also briefly teases the presence of Tachikomas in the game. How these will operate is currently unknown but if they are anything like the PSone game, then I am totally on-board.

As this is being published by Nexon, this will be a free-to-play title. Considering their history as being somewhat excessive with their monetization, I hope this won’t affect the core game too egregiously.

The game does look great though and already very polished. I can't wait to check it out once it is finally released.
