The B. R. Films banner lost its illustrious leader after producer-director Ravi Chopra, who was suffering from a lung ailment for a long time, finally succumbed to his illness on November 12 at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. The 68-year-old film-maker is survived by his wife Renu and sons, Abhay and Kapil.Yash Chopra’s sons Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra are his cousins.
Chopra will be remembered for first bringing the epic Mahabharat into every home about two decades back. The mythological show which ran from 1988-1990 on Doordarshan, established him as a competent director and is still lauded by the Indian audience.
While his illustrious film-maker father, late B.R.Chopra and uncle, late Yash Chopra have some brilliant films to their credit, Ravi started his career as an assistant to his uncle in 1969 with the Rajesh Khanna-Nanda thriller Ittefaq. He made his directorial debut in 1975 with the drama Zameer, and followed it up with films like The Burning Train, Mazdoor, Aaj Ki Awaaz, Baabul and Baghban, to name a few.
Chopra has worked with the most talented actors, ranging from Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Hema Malini, Parveen Babi, Rani Mukerji, Salman Khan and many others. Even when his father was around and ailing, Chopra kept up his attempts to keep the home banner flying high.
Bhoothnath Returns, the sequel to his hit production venture Bhoothnath was his last release. His upcoming film titled Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai which has been directed by him is yet to release.

Right from Jaya Bachchan to Imran Khan, most celebrated actors showed their solidarity by coming in large numbers. Even those who had never worked with the director-producer were present.

‘He gave his actors complete freedom’

I didn’t get a chance to meet Ravi Chopra during the making of Bhootnath Returns as he was unwell. Whatever suggestions he had to make were communicated through his wife Renuji. However, I’d worked with him earlier when he directed a commercial for me. During this span of time, we were together in Singapore for a few days. He was such a down-to-earth and humble person, considering he came from the famous Chopra clan. He was very friendly and open to suggestions from the team. He would take us out for lunch and shopping. I am still friends with both his sons Kapil and Abhay and hope to make another film with them someday.

Ravi Chopra was one of the finest human beings I have worked with. As a director, he gave his actors complete freedom and made them very comfortable. I was very fortunate to have worked with him and got to learn a lot from him which I now follow as a film-maker. I would not like to mourn this person who was so jovial, full of life and ever-smiling. I just wish he rests in eternal peace.
